The Voices of Nuclear Legacy

Washington was one of the first states to become involved in the production of nuclear weapons. Motivated by World War II and the Cold War, many of the nuclear sites operated well into the 80s. However, their impacts are still felt today due to the prolific contamination of land, air, and waterways, as well as hereditary health problems due to continued radiation exposure. Most of these nuclear sites are located on tribal land that was taken or used forcibly, without compensation or consultation. This site highlights the stories and lives of various Indigenous figures who are in some way connected or affected by Washington State’s nuclear legacy.
